Inhouse Day 2008

At 9.30 AM the students were welcomed in the Nationale Nederlanden office in The Hague. After the first cups of coffee and tea, the Inhouse Day began officially. After the welcoming speech, Prosper de Maat gave a presentation about the different business units of ING Group and specifically about ING Real Estate. The departments development, finance and investment management were further clarified. The sub prime crisis was explained in the next presentation. A short movie with an interesting and funny conversation between two people served as an introduction to this topic. After a presentation, the topic was discussed in an interactive way by means of discussion. In the discussion, the consequences of the sub prime crisis, the influence on real estate prices and the consequences for the financial continuity of the real estate organisations were discussed.

To get a better feeling for the activities of ING Real Estate, the students were challenged with a business case. De idea behind the business case was that a developer is developing a large office in The Hague and he wants an investor and a financer involve in this process. The business case started with dividing the students into groups. The different groups were assigned a discipline; the developer, the investor or the financer. Every group tried to come to an agreement with the other groups, based on certain conditions and visions. This led to a final bid which was presented to a jury of experts.

At the end of the afternoon, the career prospects were extensively discussed. The business culture, the career possibilities and the process of applying for a job were clarified. The young professionals can start in a traineeship, a young professional program ING Real Estate finance or in a regular position.

At the end of the day all the students could look back on an interesting and successful day, while having a drink with the professionals of ING Real Estate.

Inhouse Day 2007

On thursday the 22nd of March FRESH and ING Real Estate organised another successful Inhouse Day. At 10am the students where welcomed in the “Haagse Poort” in The Hague by Prosper de Maat, Talent Manager of ING Real Estate. He opened the day with a general introduction to ING Real Estate and a presentation of the programme for the day.

After this short introduction the room was for David Blight, CEO Investment Management. David held a very impressive presentation about ING Real Estate in general, he told us about all recent developments within ING Real Estate. Besides this he also gave us his personal vision on the real estate market today.

The presentation by David Blight was followed by a presentation by Marcel Kooij, Associate Director of ING Real Estate Development. His presentation was about the Zlote Tarasy project in Warsaw, Poland. This is one of the key projects of ING Real Estate Development but also one of the most troublesome. Marcel was brought into the project to solve the problems in the project, in his presentation he presented the students the unexpected problems which he came across in Warsaw.

After this presentation it was time for a quick lunch followed by an interactive case. The case which the students had to work on was the case of the “Koningstoren” in The Hague. Interesting about this case where the negotiations that had to be performed with the other students. In the end each group of students had to present their case to a jury of professionals. The winning team won tickets for the Provada 2007.
We ended the Inhouse Day with an informal drink for all participants, trainees, supervisors and other employees. Looking back we can conclude that this Inhouse Day was a great success. We would like to thank the organisation and all participants for this accomplishment.

Inhouse Day 2006

On Friday the 22nd of March, 25 enthusiastic FRESH students attended the ING Real Estate Inhouse Day. At 10 o’clock everyone got together in the meeting room on the 8th floor of the ‘Haagse poort’ in The Hague.

After a quick introduction of the ING Real Estate business lines and a clear presentation about the business and activities of ING Real Estate around the globe the case could begin. For this case the group was divided in the different business lines of ING Real Estate, Finance, Investment management, Development I or Development II.

In the first round the groups had the chance to ‘meet and greet’ and discover each others interests and obstacles. After the first heavy sessions of negotiating everyone enjoyed a nice lunch. During the lunch all the current trainees joined the group to share their experience with ING Real Estate so far.

After lunch, Erik Faber of ING Real Estate gave a very interesting and impressive presentation of one of ING Real Estate most prestigious projects: The Montevideo project, located in Rotterdam. With a lot of different pictures Faber took us around the world and showed us the trends and differences among the various parts of the world.

The second negotiation round was an exciting one. This time the groups had to try to realize their objectives. Next the groups had to prepare their presentations. With the help of only one flip over sheet they had to convince the jury of their findings and final outcomes.

While Prosper de Maat, Talent Manager of ING Real Estate and previous FRESH Chairman Mark van Westerlaak, currently trainee, gave the students a presentation about the various options to start a career at ING Real Estate, the jury prepared their final judgement.

They jury was amazed by the various, creative outcomes the groups found, however, no one found the right solution. During the prize-giving several students and groups got complimented by their special or creative input. The Finance group was presented as the winner of the day.

We ended the Inhouse Day with an informal drink for all participants, trainees, supervisors and other employees. In total we can conclude that this Inhouse Day was (again) a great success. We would like to thank the organisation and all participants for this accomplishment.

Inhouse Day 2005

We started the day at 10 am at the headquarters of ING Real Estate in The Hague. After a good cup of coffee, the program could begin. The chairman of the day, Xavier Jongen, introduced us to ING Real Estate and told us about the three different business lines of ING Real Estate; Finance, Development and Investment Management. In addition, Bert Kragtwijk gave a presentation about the activities of ING Real Estate in general and about the collaboration of the different business lines. Then, it was time to focus on the case, on which the students had to work on that afternoon. Xavier Jongen and Arjen Seckel introduced the case. The group was split in four, according to the different business lines. One group represented Finance, one group Investment Management and two groups represented Development. So now the real work could begin. After two hours of severe negotiations, the groups had to make sure there was a deal. Before they could enjoy lunch, the groups also had to prepare a presentation. After the lunch break, the groups presented their findings to a professional jury. The Finance group won, because they performed the best during the negotiations.

The second part of the day some more lectures were given. The first one was by mrs. Baars, an interesting story about the ING House, about how the location was chosen, what was important for the architect, and how the building functions these days. After a short break, Mark van Westerlaak, the chairman of FRESH, told the group what FRESH stands for and what kind of activities FRESH will organize soon. Last but not least, Henk Jan Jensema and his two trainees gave an introduction about the traineeships at ING Real Estate. The day ended with an informal drink. We think this day was a great success and we would like to thank the organization and all the participants!

Inhouse Day 2004

On Friday February 21st FRESH has organised an Inhouse Day in co-operation with ING Real Estate. The day took place at the ‘Haagse Poort’ in The Hague and the main goal of the day was to create an interactive program between ING Real Estate and the 30 participating academic students. In the morning there were presentations about the missions and the strategies from this global player. Students got the opportunity to get some inside information about the three business lines of ING Real Estate: Investment management, Development and Finance.

The different interests of these three business lines also appeared in the case study ‘Hartjesstad’. The students worked on the case after an informal lunch with the employees of ING Real Estate. Afterwards, they debated about the case with each other. Afterwards, the students integrated with the employees of all three business lines of ING Real Estate during the informal drink.
